Last year on Indigenous People Day, Minnetonka reaffirmed their five key commitments to the Native American community. And on the one-year anniversary of that announcement, on this Indigenous People’s Day, heritage footwear brand Minnetonka releases their first Indigenous-designed beaded moccasin collection. This collaboration features Indigenous-designed beaded mocs in collaboration with Red Lake Nation designer Lucie Skjefte.

Lucie Skjefte is a designer, mentor, and educator from Minnesota. A citizen of the Red Lake Nation Anishinaabeg, Skjefte is an activist that aims to positively challenge the status quo. Her embroidered tulip-style flower design is featured on the new Ziigwan Waabigwan Mocs, which translates to “Spring Flower” in Ojibwemowin, the language of the Anishinaabe people.

“As a Minnesota Native based in Minneapolis, Minnetonka is a local brand that I’m quite familiar with. I’ve been following their journey in the past year since they have reaffirmed their commitments to the Indigenous community, so I was pleased when Adrienne [Benjamin] reached out to me about designing a collection. Each pair of the Ziigwan Waabigwan Mocs retails for $62.95 and are available in sizes 5 to 11 in brown suede and grey suede.

A product lifetime royalty will be paid to Skjefte for her original design. Additionally, Minnetonka will be making a separate monetary donation to a MIGIZI, aNative American non-profit that serves Native youth, which was selected by Lucie Skjefte.
